Hawaiʻi Division of Forestry and Wildlife (DOFAW)

The Hawaiʻi Department of Land and Natural Resources’ Division of Forestry and Wildlife (DOFAW) works to protect, manage, and restore Hawaiʻi’s native forests, wildlife, and natural ecosystems in partnership with communities across the state. DOFAW oversees Wildlife Sanctuaries, Forest Reserves, Natural Area Reserves, and programs focused on endangered species recovery, habitat restoration, invasive species management, outdoor recreation, and conservation education. Hōlanikū (Kure Atoll) Wildlife Sanctuary is managed through a collaborative partnership between DOFAW and Kure Atoll Conservancy.

Papahānaumokuākea Marine National Monument

Established in 2006, one of the world’s largest marine protected areas and a UNESCO World Heritage Site, Papahānaumokuākea protects the remote Northwestern Hawaiian Islands and their surrounding waters. Encompassing more than 582,000 square miles, the monument safeguards globally significant marine and terrestrial ecosystems, Native Hawaiian cultural heritage, and historic resources. Hōlanikū (Kure Atoll) is the northernmost atoll within the monument, where Kure Atoll Conservancy works in partnership with the State of Hawaiʻi to restore native habitats, monitor wildlife, and protect this extraordinary place for future generations.

Papahānaumokuākea National Marine Sanctuary

Designated in 2025, Papahānaumokuākea National Marine Sanctuary is America’s 18th national marine sanctuary and the largest in the National Marine Sanctuary System. The sanctuary protects the marine waters within the monument and provides additional opportunities for research, education, and community engagement.
