July 29 – The highest tsunami wave from Russia’s Kamchatka Peninsula 8.8 earthquake was 1.79 meters at Midway, which was probably similar to Kure. The Kure team stayed inside the main building. Tomorrow, they will take pictures and a GPS track around the run-up from the wave. There are still small waves happening, so everyone is staying off the beach until it’s all clear.
July 31 – Updates from the crew stationed on Kure rolled in yesterday. The scene from the pier shows that the high water mark came up the beach but did not inundate the dunes or any of the paths to the interior. The westernmost point of the island is a long sandy spit, and there was some overwash there, but overall, the impact from the tsunami is minimal.
Mahalo to everyone for your concern and continued support for our remote field team. We will send updates as they become available.
