Aloha from Hōlanikū! Enjoy our latest field blog from Delia
It’s been a full and productive week out here. We’ve been busy transecting and wrapping up inventories of our food, tools, and shed appliances. Nick spent time this weekend in the shed labeling and repairing, which now looks impressively organized.
With a stretch of rainy, misty weather, we kept up our regular surveys. On Friday, we completed our shorebird and Hawaiian Monk Seal surveys, followed by booby (Sula spp.) monitoring. The sun finally came out this weekend! There were a few exciting wildlife moments, too—Jordan spotted a Whitebar Surgeonfish (Acanthurus leucopareius) and a Belted Wrasse (Stethojulis balteata) for the first time this weekend. He was thrilled about that.
Evenings have been a mix of relaxing and catching up on shows and movies. We wrapped up Season 3 of Invincible and are diving into Season 4 tonight. We’ve also been making our way through The Dark Knight trilogy.
Food has definitely been a highlight lately. I baked some fresh bread, Kayla made some awesome moist brownies, Jordan made pumpkin pie, and Nick and Kayla made ice cream. Tonight, Nick made some cast-iron pizza that turned out really well. On top of that, Kayla’s kombucha was ready this weekend and turned out quite tasty.
We are getting ready to transect SWQA1 and SWQA4 tomorrow.
Wishing you all a great week!
Delia
