Aloha from Hōlanikū
Last week was a short work week, but it was packed full. Every minute spent restoring this place reminds us why we’re here — small efforts add up in a big way. Enjoy the latest field blog from Delia!
Aloha everyone,
We had a short and sweet 4 day work week. Verbisina (“Verb”) continues to be found on the island. This week we also worked on some marine debris, the Verb staking project, trail cutting, and Booby monitoring. The marine debris sadly feels endless, but every minute we spend helping this environment flourish is worthwhile. Nick also replaced the starter cord on one of our generators with Kayla’s help. He wanted me to mention that his hands were too fat to fit into the generator (hence the assist) and that he only had to fix it because he accidentally broke it
Yesterday was exceptionally warm and sunny, which was needed after a week of wind and rain. A couple thousand Indo-Pacific Man-o-Wars washed up on the East side of the island.
We watched a wide array of movies this week including Bullet Train, The Pink Panther Diamond, Love Me Love Me, and Along came Polly. We are also still adding buoys to The Roost decor with a green buoy found earlier this week in addition to a yellow one, 2 new colors. The team spent Saturday outside with Kayla painting, Nick was out monitoring Boobies, and Jordan and I did our ab workout outside. Saturday night was spent playing the National Parks game for the first time which was an interesting trivia game.
Jordan made delicious homemade buns yesterday with hot dogs and burgers for dinner. Jordan and I made pumpkin chocolate chip cookies today. We had a free-for-all Wednesday meal with everyone doing their own thing for dinner.
Shout out to Nick who is currently doing Lent and has a resolution not to snack between meals.
Bird Observations: ‘Ewa ’ewa/Sooty Terns increasing in number to 1000+ birds, Pākalakala/ Gray-backed Tern increasing to around 30 birds, Nazca Booby continuing, 2 new Brown Booby nests, 6 new Masked Booby nests, and Red-footed Boobies moving further along in their courtship & copulation. It won’t be long before we start to see eggs!
